Ten years ago, Music 4 Mental Health began with a simple yet powerful mission: to bring the healing power of music to veterans through lessons and clinics that offered more than just melodies, they offered hope, connection, and purpose. What started as a grassroots initiative has grown into a transformative program that now serves not only veterans but all first responders, recognizing the shared challenges they face and the restorative potential of music.

Over the years, the program has expanded its reach and impact, providing students with access to instruments and personalized instruction. From one-on-one lessons to immersive group clinics, Music 4 Mental Health has become a sanctuary for those seeking solace and strength through sound.

Now, a major milestone is on the horizon. This year, we will proudly open the doors to our first dedicated physical space, located within the Calgary Veterans Association. This new facility will allow us to offer individual, group, and peer-led lessons seven days a week, creating a consistent and welcoming environment for learning and healing. Outfitted with state-of-the-art AV equipment, the space will also enable us to connect with remote and international students, ensuring no one is left out due to geography.

Our journey has been supported by an incredible community, including renowned musicians who have generously shared their time and talent. Canadian artist Sean Kelly (Lee Aaron Band, Coney Hatch, Helix), Lee Aaron, Derry Grehan of Honeymoon Suite, international guitar virtuoso Gary Hoey, and even Dee Snider, the iconic frontman of Twisted Sister, have all lent their voices and instruments to our cause.

Looking ahead, we’re deepening our commitment to the science behind the music. Our curriculum will now include sessions led by certified music therapists, helping students understand the clinical and neurological benefits of music in how it can reduce stress, improve mood, and foster resilience.

As we prepare for our grand opening before the new year, we reflect with gratitude on the past decade and look forward with excitement to the future. Music 4 Mental Health is more than a program, it’s a movement, and we’re just getting started.
